Assessment of parathyroid function

Parathyroid Health

Our services encompass comprehensive Parathyroid health management. Every service option consists of a consultation and a clinical examination.

Parathyroid health concerns may include such symptoms as:

  • Long standing and progressive back or other bone pain
  • Vague abdominal complaints, such as pain or cramps
  • Renal stones
  • Increased urination and thirst
  • Vague mental complaints such depression and slow mentation

Our parathyroid health assessment services include taking a detailed parathyroid relevant history and a clinical examination. If indicated, a parathyroid ultrasound is performed and parathyroid related blood examinations are requested.

The parathyroid glands are responsible for the production of the parathyroid hormone, which helps maintain an appropriate balance of calcium in the bloodstream and in tissues that depend on calcium for proper functioning.

Overproduction of the parathyroid hormone leads to high levels of calcium in the blood and urine with too little phosphorus, or too little calcium in bones.

Diagnosis of the condition involves a blood calcium test first and based on that result, a range of tests to determine whether it’s primary hyperparathyroidism. Primary hyperparathyroidism is most commonly (85% of cases) due to a single hyper-functioning gland. This gland can be localized through a number of imaging investigations.

Primary hyperparathyroidism can easily be treated with minimally invasive surgery via a “buttonhole” incision in the neck. Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.
